Grateful nurse says thanks

October 9, 2023 | in News, Shocktober 2023

A Mildura nurse has thanked the GoodSAM responder and paramedics who saved her life after she suffered a cardiac arrest at home earlier this year.

Brenda Beattie was asleep when her heart stopped in May.

Her husband James noticed she wasn鈥檛 breathing and called Triple Zero (000) before starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

(L-R): GoodSAM responder Lockie Shaw, MICA intern Craig Stack, Mildura Senior Team Manager Bronwyn Lambert, Brenda and James Beattie, Mildura Base Public Hospital ICU nurse Nicole Davey, Graduate Paramedic Superanse Nduwarugira.

GoodSAM responder Lockie Shaw and AV6K成人网 (AV) paramedics arrived soon thereafter and administered 14 shocks with a defibrillator, which brought Ms Beattie鈥檚 heartbeat back.

Almost five months since, the 55-year-old was reunited with those who saved her.

鈥淚鈥檓 just lucky,鈥 she said.

鈥淚鈥檓 really grateful they were able to come so quickly.鈥

It was a special reunion for Mr Shaw, who had attended other GoodSAM alerts without a positive outcome.

鈥淚鈥檝e responded to six others, but unfortunately everyone鈥檚 passed away,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the best feeling to see that Brenda survived.鈥

Mr Shaw said his experience as a volunteer firefighter led him to join GoodSAM.

鈥淢y brother showed me the app and I decided to sign up as I already respond to emergencies every day,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 like helping people and I enjoy giving back to the community.鈥

AV Mildura Senior Team Manager, Bronwyn Lambert, said Ms Beattie鈥檚 case shows the importance of early intervention in the chain of survival.

鈥淔or every minute that CPR is delayed, a cardiac arrest patient鈥檚 chance of survival decreases by 10 per cent,鈥 she said.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 why it is so important that bystanders begin CPR and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), if available.鈥

AV6K成人网鈥檚 Shocktober campaign, which runs through the month of October, aims to improve cardiac arrest survival rates by encouraging more AV6K成人网 to register as GoodSAM responders.

鈥淕oodSAM is a life-saving smartphone app that connects AV6K成人网 in cardiac arrest with members of the community who are willing to start CPR in the critical minutes before paramedics arrive,鈥 Ms Lambert said.

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to have to be first-aid qualified or have a medical background to sign-up and save a life, you just need to be willing and able to do hands-only CPR, be over 18 years of age and have access to a smartphone.鈥

Shocktober is a month-long campaign to highlight the importance of learning CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
